“What is Millwork?”
I had this conversation with a customer the other day. What is “millwork”? To him it was “mouldings”; to me it is: molding, windows, doors, and custom mantels, etc.
You see I have this talk every day; all day. Every time I meet a customer I have to figure out what “millwork’ means to him or her.
Technically we are all right with our interpretation; all of the above are millwork.
So to cover all three here we go. First mouldings; we stock around fifty patterns. From the most basic 2-1/4” casing up to a four inch casing; base moulding from 3-1/4” up to 9-1/4”. Then we have close to 800 custom patterns available from our “millwork” shop. They run most of the custom stuff out of poplar, but we can make it out of any species of lumber you have a need for.
Second, doors and windows are considered a millwork product because the companies that manufacture windows and doors buy raw material and mill the components to the spec’s they desire. That’s why when customers come in with a window part; it’s not that easy to just “get a replacement part”.
Third, and my personal favorite, is any and everything that our millwork shop produces is what I consider millwork. We have some of the most talented people who work at our shop. They can produce true custom mouldings, the perfect fireplace mantel, a screen door, shutters; I could on and on. If you can think of it they can make it.
So in conclusion we are all right! We just use the term to mean different things at different times. So if you need “millwork” we have just what you need.
